£500,000 social centre to open in Wolverhampton
A £500,000 state-of-the art social centre that will cater for scores of pensioners in Wolverhampton will open its doors next week.
Showell Court social centre, built by Accord Housing Association and Wates Living Space, will provide a range of facilities for up to 30 elderly people in Low Hill each day when it officially opens next Friday (27 January).
It will house a nail bar, hairdressing and beauty salons - offering treatments ranging from facials and aromatherapy to manicures - and a fully equipped gym with low impact machines.
Third year students studying hair and beauty at Wolverhampton College will sharpen their skills at the social centre in Othello Road by offering cut-price treatments to visitors.
There will also be regular activities and events, including arts and crafts and fitness classes, and two rooms will be available for people to hire for events and parties.
A shop, selling everyday essentials like bread and milk, will also be based at the centre for tenants of sheltered housing scheme Showell Court to use.
Maureen Bradley, Director of Care and Support for Accord Housing Association, said: “We have been supporting people in this community for more than 15 years and to continue to meet the needs of older people in Wolverhampton we must build innovative new facilities.”
“This modern and well-equipped centre will offer a range of services and activities at an affordable price, making them accessible to all budgets. It’s also fantastic to be supporting and working with Wolverhampton College, whose students will be providing hairdressing and beauty treatments at our salon.”
Steve Deeley, Programme Co-ordinator at Wolverhampton College, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Accord Housing Association. For students there is nothing like hands-on experience to develop skills and this scheme not only enables students to gain that valuable work experience but also encourages learners to take an active part in their community.”
Local businesses, clubs and societies will be able to hire meeting and training rooms within the social centre and use the services of its onsite catering team.
